Arabic literature, especially poetry, has a long history. It dates back to the the period before Islam. Then, it grew well during the 8th to the 15th century. It continued from then on until the present. Present-day poets like Al-Baradouni and Ahmed Shawqi reminds us of Umayyad and Abbasid poets.

During the 20th century, new forms of Arabic literature appeared. Of these, novels and plays are the most famous. At the beginning, most novels and plays in Arabic were translations from English and Russian. Arabs started to like reading these literary works, so Arab writers produced great works.
