Juha and the Stingy

The following Arabic short story is an abridged one. It is taken from a series of long stories written by Kamil Kilani. The original text is written in a more advanced Arabic. This version is a simplified one.

In a hot day, Juha walked in the desert. He didn’t have food or water. From a far, he saw a man eating food and drinking water. He became happy and got close to the man. He recognized the man. The man was Saleh.

Juha said “peace be upon you.” Saleh replied, “peace be upon you, too.”

Juha thought that Saleh would say to him “join me”, but Saleh did not do so.

Saleh asked Juha about the situation of his wife Salma, his son Zaid, his dog, his camel, and his house.

Saleh said, “how is my dog?”

Juha said, “you dog is strong and as fearless as the lion.”

Juha waited for Saleh to say “join me” but he did not do so.

Salah said, “how is my wife Salam?”

Juha said, “your wife is a generous woman, and she is in good health.”

Juha waited for Saleh to say “join me”, but he did not do so.

Saleh ate a mouthful and said, “how is my son Zaid?”

Juha said, “your son is in good health.”

Juha waited for Saleh to say “join me”, but he did not do so.

Saleh continued eating and said, “and how is my camel?”

Juha said, “you camel is strong and enduring and is in good health.”

Juha waited for Saleh to say, “please join me”, but he did not do so.

After all these questions, Juha became angry because Saleh did not say to him “please join me”. For this reason, Juha thought of a trick.

A skinny dog passed by. Saleh laughed at the dog and said, “there is no dog like mine.”

Juha said, “yes, if your dog lived, he would become the king of dogs.”

Saleh said, “did my dog die?”

Juha said, “yes, he had eaten a piece of meat of your camel and it clogged its throat, so he died.”

Saleh screamed and said, “did my camel die?”

Juha said, “yes, it had fallen into the grave of your wife, and it broke its neck, so people slaughtered it.”

Saleh screamed and said, “did my wife die?”

Juha said, “yes, she died of sadness because her son Zaid died. The house had collapsed on him.”

Saleh screamed and cried. He beat his chest and pulled the hair of his beard. He forgot the food and ran in the desert like a mad man.
